Ionisation or Photoelectric (Optical)? While all smoke alarms are designed to detect smoke, certain sensing technologies react differently to certain types of fire.Photoelectric sensing technology is generally more sensitive (than ionization sensing technology) at detecting large particles. Large particles tend to be produced in greater amounts by shouldering fires. These fires may smoulder for hours before bursting into flames.
Ionization sensing technology is generally more sensitive (than photoelectric sensing technology) at detecting small particles. Small particles tend to be produced in greater amounts by flaming fires. These fires consume combustible materials rapidly and spread quickly.
For optimum protection we recommend the use of both photoelectric and ionization alarms on each level of a house.

BRK 6230BFP Mains Powered Interconnectable Heat Alarm With Alkaline Battery Back Up PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS HEAT ALARM HAS BEEN REPLACED BY THE DICON 680MBX - SEE BELOW BRK’s Heat Alarms have been developed for use in places where a smoke detector may not be suitable. A Heat Alarm gives additional fire warning protection when used in conjunction with a smoke detector system. BRK’s Heat Alarms can be used in areas where high ambient air temperatures, high humidity, condensation or cooking may cause a smoke detector to be activated falsely. Ideally Heat Alarms should be used in all kitchen-diners, lofts, garages or boiler rooms. Building Regulations recognise the importance of Heat Alarms and recommend them to be installed in addition to or as an alternative when smoke alarms are unsuitable. Heat Alarms could also be considered for integral garages connected to the house via a door. Flammable liquids inside a garage or workshop can be a distinct fire risk and the typically dusty atmosphere would not be a suitable environment for a smoke detector. BRK’s Heat Alarms should not be used as a replacement for smoke alarms, but can be used in conjunction with or as stand alone fire detection. BRK’s smoke and heat alarms can be fully integrated into BRK’s Flexipoint mini-system.
